The Magical Forest

Article in John's HOT NLP Tips January 2011 by Trine Åldstedt

Around the corner from my house is a magical forest. I discovered it by accident a dark day some years ago.

In my corner of the universe this is the dark and cold time of the year. The months were we wake up in darkness, leave for work in darkness, might see some daylight outside the office windows during work hours, but drive back home in darkness even in the early afternoon. With a daily average of -20 °C / -4 °F it’s also a “stay inside, light candles and the fireplace, get yourself comfortable and stay there” kind of cold.

But not for me. My blessing is two active dogs, happily welcoming me home with sparkling eyes shouting “Out, Out, Out. Now, Now, Now”. So I let the comfy pictures go, strap up my “armor for warmth” and go outside. With two happy bouncing companions in front, headlamp lit, I’m heading for our next-door forest. The shadows soon swallow us as we enter.

The snow lays heavy on the landscape, making the trees and branches hang down, shadows and shapes showing contours of alien beings. We are where the trolls originate. Actually several of them are here just now, watching, lurking, ready, knows exactly where we are.

I am tired, my computer shoulders aching, my thoughts busy talking to me about some negatives from the day. I’m walking head down, feeling the cold, longing for some time off in lazy warm daze elsewhere.

I reach a part of my walk where the masses of snow make the trees bend over and branches hang heavy over the path from each side, forming a narrow tunnel to walk through. As I step in I lift my head to see how to maneuver and the headlamp lights up the air in front of me. Everything stops.

The freezing crystallized air, the snowflakes on the branches. In a split of a second I’m transferred to another world. Out in space or somewhere, surrounded by sparkling lights, shiny crystals and oceans of colors. I’m inside of a magnificent white diamond universe. Swoosh - the dark thoughts vanish, the negative dialogue stops, the tiredness in my body gone. All I am is glitter in the air, one with a breathtaking quiet symphony, a sparkling being of beauty, magic and possibilities.

As I come out of the tunnel I see the stars shining from a bluish night black sky, the moon playing hide and seek with the tree tops, clean white powder snow soundlessly falling, touching the trees, the ground, my path covered with dancing fat energized snow feathers. I am transformed, wide awake, sensing from a source providing a total different view. My inner state, thoughts, self talk and resources supportive, powerful, open, happy, playful.

Nature is powerful beyond measure. Nature is magical. Nature is honest. The presence of nature immediately removes filters and imaginations of lesser “truths”, tired thoughts and bodily strain. Just like that. It unites us with our greatness. Being in nature we cannot not get in honest touch with ourselves.

Around the corner of my house is a magical forest. I discovered it by accident a lucky day some years ago and have used it on a daily basis ever since. Through the seasons, in rain, snow, sun, warmth, cold it has opened my eyes for invisible treasures. In thoughts, ideas, physical pains, other dimensions, truths and realities. I have brought questions, challenges, worries and fears to my forest and it has given me amazing clarity, answers, help and support. And it all started when I saw all the light in the darkness. Swoosh.

So stop, open your senses, be aware. The magic is present and accessible wherever you are. There is always the sky and clouds to look up on, a tree, a flower, grass, a mountain, the sea, a lake, a river, the sand, some stones. Just be there. Breathe. And the magic will do what it does. Naturally.

Because nature is free.
